Under general supervision, perform facility and equipment inspections for compliance with internal policies, procedures, state and federal regulations, lab-pack chemical waste, transport waste from departments to Accumulation Area, and pertaining to scheduled inspections for storm water compliance, hazardous waste management compliance, lab safety, general safety, and SPCC Plan (Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan).

Essential Functions
*Conducts routine / scheduled inspections for Storm Water Pollution Prevention, Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Plan, Hazardous Waste Accumulation Areas, Waste Satellite Areas, Waste Water Discharge Monitoring, Asbestos Inspector, Laboratory Safety, and General Safety including Fire / Life Safety.

*Conducts Indoor Air Quality Monitoring and air flow inspections of fume hoods in laboratories.

*Assists Confined Space Entries with air monitoring clearance.
*Assists with Fire / Life Safety Audits, maintenance of monitoring equipment, and suppression.

*Develops and assists with Work Orders relative to Environmental Health and Safety for WFU campus.
*Maintains Safety Response Team equipment calibration and inventory.
*Participates on University's Safety Response Team.

*Is considered an essential employee as designated in the Facilities & Campus Servicest Severe Weather Policy and Crisis Management Plan.
*Is subject to recall after hours in the event of campus emergencies, disasters, or other special needs as directed by management.

Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree plus 3-5 years of related experience in the application of Environmental Health and Safety laws and guidelines that support compliance programs for the University, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Continuing Education must be utilized to provide current knowledge of regulations and new technologies. Must continue certifications and maintain recent training agenda. Experience with HazWoper Operations required. 40 hour HAZWOPER certification preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability
*Demonstrated knowledge of applicable environmental and safety regulations and guidelines established by Federal, State, and Local Governing Authorities such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), DOT (Department of Transportation), North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and Local Regulating Agencies.
*Experience with Storm Water Management Regulations and Hazardous Waste Management.
*Must be analytical and efficient with maintaining hazardous waste inventory, inspection records for Storm Water Management, SPCC Plan (Spill Prevention, Control, & Countermeasure), Asbestos Management Plan, Chemical Inventories Requirements governed by OSHA & EPA, and Waste Minimization Plan.
*Ability to inspect operations at the University for environmental and safety compliance and assist with Corrective Action.
*Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, with internal and external customers. Ability to handle conflicting situations as they arise.
*Proficiency in computer skills and relevant software including Microsoft Office, Excel and the Internet.

Database Intern

Global environmental change poses a significant challenge to society. This is most pronounced in the developing regions of the world where the populace is most vulnerable to changes in the environment and where there are insufficient numbers of scientists to conduct the necessary regional and local-scale research on environmental changes.

START, the global change SysTem for Analysis, Research and Training, provides an international framework to build capacity for scientists in the developing world. It provides opportunities for scientists to obtain knowledge and skills that can be used to inform decision-makers and impact policy within their own regions, countries and communities.

START is now seeking an intern for this Winter. The intern will work together with the staff at the Secretariat specifically to develop a network for scientists who have previously or are currently working with START. The intern will be actively involved in developing and implementing an accessible, user-friendly, on-line database.

Skills/Requirements

Eligible to work in the United States, no work visas will be available for this internship.
College student with a computer science degree preferred.
Must have technical database development experience.
Must be able to work with Mac Computers.
Interest in global environmental change a plus.

Eco-Art Arts Educator/Interpreter
Permanent & Full Time Position

Artist Boat is seeking 3 motivated, creative, and self-starting art and science educators with environmental backgrounds to deliver Eco-Art Workshops, Adventures, and Residencies to the communities of the Houston/Galveston Region, Louisanna (2-3 weeks a year) and Central/Lower Texas Coast (2-3 weeks a yaear).
Job Description: Primary duty is to interpret habitats, ecosystems, science, and the environment through the disciplines of science and art for people of all ages engaging in Eco-Art experiences with the Artist Boat. Educator must be able to clearly and enthusiastically:
• Be able to work with a team member who is a specialist in science or art in a professional and positive manner in the field, office, and via technology;
• Present art and/or science skills and knowledge to students and adults in order to facilitate the creation of works of art interpreting the coastal margins and marine ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico in classrooms, via kayak and vessel, on walking tours, on campus habitats, in the classroom, and during habitat stewardship events;
• Master the content of the natural history of the region, species identification;
• Must be able to pass certification as an ACA Kayak instructor with the first three months of employment or date of course, maintain 1st aid and CPR certification, and attend any certifications or conference trainings deemed necessary by the Director of Education;
• Interact with persons of all ages in a positive, professional, encouraging, and informative manner;
• Lift 60 pounds, load and unload a kayak/canoe trailer, spend 8 hours outside on a regular basis;
• Be able to design, implement, teach, and deliver hands-on arts activities for Eco-Art Residencies, Workshops, and Adventures;
• Be able to work in the media of drawing, clay, printmaking, painting, and mosaic and/or work in the media of technology tools in order to train teacher/students to produce low frequency radio show;
• Be able to install large scale public works, to build large scale mosaics and sculptures, and have experience working with electrical tools and kilns and/or have expertise with NOAA science data tools and use of technology for media and teaching;
• Maintain a portion of the website to display program information and curriculum relating to programs personally responsible for;
• Enthusiastically learn, acquire, and research new knowledge about arts media and trends and/or learn, acquire, and research new knowledge and tools with regards to ocean science and literacy;
• Enthusiastically learn, acquire, and research knowledge about native flora, fauna, and ecosystems in order to properly identify species and assist in interpretation of habitats;
• Represent the Artist Boat and the mission of the Artist Boat during events and in the community,
• In addition, be willing and able to drive to destinations through out the Galveston Bay region to deliver programming, be willing to work weekends, and be willing to fully commit to the mission of the Artist Boat;
• Fully understand the different challenges and constraints and hardwork associated with non-profit work;
• Fully understand Galveston and the Upper Texas Coast is undergoing recovery from Hurricane Ike and the mission of Artist Boat is committed to the endeavor both as an organization and member of the community.
• Be able to attend ACA Kayak Certification Course in Galveston during March 20 – March 23, 2009.
• Be living in the region and able to start full time permanent work on April 1, 2009 or sooner.
Other duties may entail:
• Developing curricula in conjunction with artists and other staff members, in conjunction with specific partners for new programs in different habitats and via different modes of transportation, and document lesson plans developed for Eco-Art Residency programs;
• Assisting with the development of interpretive tools via signage, radio broadcasts, podcasts or website; and
• Developing programs and events that fulfill the mission of the Artist Boat.
• Assist in recording statistics and analysis of pre/post tests and teacher evaluations, communication with press and writing of press articles, and fulfillment of state and federal grants;
• Willing to take the time to continue education through conferences, professional developments, workshops, and certifications the Artist Boat believes are important to attend.

Requirements:
Bachelor of Fine Arts and/or Bachelors of Science. 1 to 2 years experience in arts, outdoors, and/or environmental education.

Starting Salary: $23,000 with frequent reviews and raises based upon performance, evidence of prior experience in the field of science and art during the first 90 days of work and contributions to Artist Boat’s success.
