THROUGH THE EYES OF YOUTH

"Because village people do not like owls, they kill them and stake them to cast away the bad spirits." Youth photographer Istvan Kerekes took this photo in western Transylvania in the village of Luncavija, Romania. It is one of a dozen taken to make a visual representation of the most austere environmental problems on the Balkans through the eyes of young people. The calendar project, titled The Earth From Below, was an International Youth Photo Competition through
A SEED Europe. You can
download the 2009 calendar and view all of the submitted
photos online. Please support this remarkable initiative by clicking

One of the best ways to take action for healing Earth is to educate our youngsters about everything environmental.

There is a well-known adage: “In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.” Bearing this in mind, Conservation International wants to teach kids about Earth's pollinators. Do you and your children know that you should thank bees for one out of every three bites of food you eat? That's because these busy little critters help pollinate much of the food we eat every day. Unfortunately, the world's bees and other pollinators are in trouble because their habitat is being destroyed at astonishing rates. Conservation International has a Bee Good to the Planet pledge, which encourages children (and their parents) to become more active with environmental issues. The
pledge site has a conservation slideshow, bee eCards you can send, and an eNewsletter you can sign up to receive.
